Cunning, sensible, but relies on other's companionship. Relaxed and confident. Early has a very flexible personality that will usually mold well with all sorts of personalities.Early is very big on respect and will argue if she is not shown the respect she thinks she deserves.
History:Early was loved by her parents and she loved them just as much, she didn't have to suck up because she knew that they loved her. Early was quickly adopted for her cute pelt colors and and friendly personality. She was put to work guarding an old man's property with a slightly older male named Gibbs. Gibbs was a smart-ass and picked on Early lightly but he knew better than to make her hate him, as they were going to be living together.
Early and Gibbs would patrol around his land. The land had grown since Gibbs was adopted the ol' man inherited more land from and even older relative. The land was seperate, Gibbs was trained to walk towards the forest up towards
White Mountain to gaurd the land, this left the ol' man's front lawn expossed to the rascally children of Nome. This required a second dog.
Gibbs trained Early how to watch the front yard and how to get the mail and told her that the ol' man takes a nap at noon. After that she was free to roam town. Early would often visit her mother during that time and would be home by the time school was out so that she could chase kids off the lawn and eat supper. As Early grew she wanted to take on more responsibilities to help Gibbs. The other land was large and usually tired Gibbs out, he also wanted to be able to see his auntie Chey again so Gibbs and Early switched watch duties.
They would switch every month or so. When the winter months hit it became harder to travel, but Early pressed on knowing that it was her duty. One of these days was especially windy causing loose snow to fly up in the air and sting Early's nose and ears. She decided to bunker down in an abondoned badger's set. It was warm and dark in there. Early couldn't help but slip into a rather deep slumber. When she woke up that's when she saw him. His white fur shone and blended with the beautiful winter background. He walked very carefully but also gracefully. His large paws left perfect footprints in the drifted snow banks.
Muffled howls were heard around Early's resting spot. She heard the name Drifter being yelled in the background. The wolf's ears instantly turned to the noise and then his face did. His deep emerald eyes met her sky blue ones. She held his eyes in a long stare, he almost seemed frightened. Early yipped with fright when she heard something walking above her den. Drifter gave her a concerned look before chauffeuring the other wolf (presumably) away. Early waited a while before leaving she kept the wolf sighting to herself for a while.
When Early returned to her guard every morning she wasn't sure weither to be frightened or scared she rethought the sighting over and over, eventually she talked to Gibbs about it. He had grown to be her most trusted friend and acted as a big brother over her. Sure he was a little persnickety but thats what Early loved about him. Gibbs had an instant mood swing. Wolves were his nemisis' but even though he has never met one he hopes to one day be able to kill them.
He asked Early where she had seen them, but Early didn't want the unfairly judged wolf or her brother figure to get hurt so she refused to tell him. This resolved the problem momentarily... Gibbs had no chance facing a wolf out in the deep snow anyways. Early ventureed quickly to the territory as she was running late one morning. The snow was starting to melt and spring was nearing. She was hoping to see the wolf one last time befor Gibbs started his shift the following week.
Thats when he found her, he didn't say anything and he didn't have to. They seemed to be on the mutual grounds to not hurt one another. His white coat had a few blood spots on it the rabbit at his feet was explination enough. When
other wolves could be heard, Drifter gave Early a stern stare and gave a swift head nod signalling her to leave. Early was happy to ablige and hide. She layed very still inside of a rotted log and listened. A female voice was heard. She sounded sharp and a little harsh on the handsome Drifter. She spoke of pests that needed to be removed. She spoke of how these pests had no manners, "leaving their scent all over the deer's grazing areas". She told Drifter that it was his job to remove them and that if he didn't she would send someone else to do it.
Early realized that her and Gibbs were the pests! But yet she couldn't hate Drifter (as he chose not to kill her) nor the female wolf. They were only trying to survive after all and her and Gibbs were just making it harder. Drifter followed the female voice back into the forest and Early eventually went home. During Gibbs' month of gaurd duty Early thought about her dreamy 'hero' Drifter but also worried about Gibbs. She hoped he wouldn't run into any of the wolves.
During this time Early visited her mother often and finally brought up the wolves in her master's land. Agatha warned her daughter that not all wolves are as accepting of dogs as her grandfather had been. She told Early what had happened to her family because of the pack's descision. Early became a little frightened but she remembered Drifter's eyes. He couldn't be bad he just couldn't.
Gibbs came home safe every night but he had a fire in his eyes. Early knew he saw one of the wolves. Early quizzed him and learned that it was just a young one. Gibbs had startled him away from his fresh kill. Gibbs had ignored him, he didn't want to fight a pup. Early sighed happily perhaps she can fix this before someone got hurt. Early made it her job when her month came to hunt down Drifter and talk to him. She went deeper into the territory than usual.
That's when she heard him. His howl made her fur prickle and her lungs close. Early held her breath and listened to the deep sorrow tone he howled. The wind caught up just then and carried Early's scent right to his nose. Drifter's eyes opened and all the sound seemed to have stopped. he looked tiredly at Early and walked closer to her. Early smiled sheepishly at him. Drifter pounced on her and she thudded roughly on an exposed tree root. He snarled. Early closed her eyes and pulled her tail between her legs. Drift bit the back of her scruff and dragged her, Early whimpered softly in pain. When Drifter let go he told her in a soft dreamy voice that she was on the edge of the territory and that she should go.
Early stood up slowly and shook some of the dirt off her fur. She looked into those harsh green eyes and spoke firmly but calmly. She warned him of Gibbs and pleaded that he not hurt him, and watch after him. Drifter nodded and vanished into the pine trees. The next day Early went looking for Drifter again. This time he was sunning himself next to a small pond. Drifter pounced at Early again but she playfully dodged him. This made Drifter snarl and Early pulled her tail between her legs again. When Drifter went to grab her scruff Early ducked out of it. She wasn't going that easy.
Drifter huffed and layed back on his rock in the sun. Early crept closer to him but Drifter snarled. Early went forward more anyway, if he really wanted to hurt her he would have done it long ago. Early and in front of him and started rolling around in the grass. She made a few faces at Drifter to get him out of such a pouty mood. Drifter pulled his ears back and huffed again. Early decided to introduce herself. Drifter smiled and told her to call him 'Drift'. Early smiled that he liked her enough to say his nickname. Nothing was really said after that, they just stared at eachother for a while before Drift got up and walked away, he gave Early a quick wink before he vanished.
Early would keep coming back again and again to see him. She did all the talking of course, she figured Drift liked being the mysterious type or maybe he was just shy. He wouldn't say much too her other than move his ears around a lot. When she told him a joke she would look at his eyes and ears to see if he liked it. Usually Drift would give Early a quizzical look. The two silently bonded over Early's month, and while Early was at home Drifter would silently watch Gibbs keeping his promise. Early soon found herself falling for the light colored wolf. His silence was comforting to her and she liked to make him smile.
Early kept him all to herself until finally she told her father on a trip up to White Mountain. Buckthorn seemed happy for his daughter but also had that awkward father-daughter chat. He was slightly afraid of her falling for a wolf but supressed this feelings as his own mate and pups were all part wolf. It didn't suprise him one bit that one of his pups would choose that path. Buckthorn told her that if she ever got into any trouble to find him no matter what.
Early's month was approaching rapidly and she grew anxious. That was until Gibbs came home full of blood. His back was full of bite marks. The skin on his face swelled one of his eyes shut and one of his legs were shredded. The ol' man washed Gibbs' wounds and wrapped them in old bandana's. The ol' man told Gibbs that he was a good boy and would let him lap up water from his hand since Gibbs couldn't make it to the bowl. Early slept closer to Gibbs that night than she ever had. Her big 'brother' was hurt and she wouldn't let him be alone. Early licked his face soothingly until he fell asleep.
Early on the other hand couldn't sleep a bit. Her mind was racing, who would have done this? Drift was supposed to be watching Gibbs. Did he lose track of him? Did he not watch him at all? Or was Drifter in just as bad a shape Gibbs? Or worst of all did Drifter do this? Early tried to push the last two questions out of her mind. When morning came Early went to go see what had happened yesterday. The ol' man warned Early to be careful and sent Edmund, a dog he picked up by the post office with a 'Free' sign hanging on his neck. Edmund followed Early silently while Gibbs napped on the porch with the ol' man. Gibbs was wary of Edmund though and watched the pair with his non-swollen eye.
Early was nervous having Edmund with her. For one she didn't know what kind of dog he was and secondly Edmund might not like wolves. Edmund was eerily quiet, it wasn't charming or mysterious like Drift. His quiet almost seemed learned and made Early uncomfortable. She still couldn't find any words to break the awful choking silence. She eventually told Edmund to wait there while she scouted ahead. She wanted to find out on her own. Edmund looked at her warily but shook his head and sat down.
Early waited until she was sure that Edmund knew she meant it. Off into the woods the red fluffy female went. She felt nervous and almost afraid of what was going to come. Thats when she found him. Drift, his ears were torn and his eyes were shut peacefully. Drifter woke up slowly to look at Early and she was shoked to see the pool of blood around his chest. He had multiple lesions on his chest and stomach. Drifter hissed as he tried to stand and Early ran to him and started to clean his wounds. Drifter rested his weary head on her neck while she lapped her tounge at his wounds. Drifter spoke finally, his voice was more orotund than she remembered.
He lowered his voice feeling her shock. He had a wide grin on his face and nuzzled Early under his neck and licked her ear affectionately. Early loved every second of this moment and nuzzled softly into his long neck fur. Her feelings about him were right, he didn't hurt Gibbs. He promised...
Edmund was sick, he was sick in the head and the pretty girl he was stuck with left him alone. Like Her. He wasn't going to be left anymore. He wasn't going to be played anymore.
Early parted slowly with Drifter and they both broke away neither of them saying anything. Drifter disappeared first leaving behind Early's affectionate gaze. Early left slowly and met Edmund on the territory's edge. Edmund had a strange angry protective look on his face and rushed to Early. She had blood on her muzzle, ruff, and ears. Edmund damanded to know where she was. Early huffed, she wasn't going to tell some demanding stranger about her problems. Edmund snapped warningly at Early. This caused Early's hair to rise and she snarlled...
The next thing Early knew was that she was back in the badger's set where she first saw Drifter. Early jerked her head up only to feel blood gushing from neck wounds by an origin that was unknown to her. Drift pulled her into a loving enbrace while his body shook. Early was worried and jerked her head to ask him what was wrong. When more blood oozed from her neck and after seeing Drifter's pained expression Early learned that she wasn't going to make it. Drifter mumbled a soft tearful mantra to himself. 'She's going to make it' 'He missed the jugular' 'She's going to make it....'
Early whispered to Drifter hoarsly and asked what happened. Drifter explained that Edmund attacked her and knocked her into a tree. Drifter's pack heard Edmund's growls and barks and chased him out of the territory. Drift came running in just to see his alpha bite Early's neck. When the pack left Drifter carried Early on his back to the badger burrow. Early asked Drifter more questions to distract them both from what was happening currently. Drift told Early all about his life, how he was raised to be the future alpha. He explained how his brother had died from freezing to death.
Drift talked about how it was his duty to exterminate all the dogs that had been chasing away the prey with their scent. But then he told her that he watched her for many monthes before their first actual meeting. He just couldn't do it. He also talked about how her jokes warmed up his usually cold personality. Drifter said finally of how he defended Gibbs from the other wolves in his pack and how they both took a beating. This warmed Early's heart as she drifted dreamfully off to sleep. To her suprise she woke up back on her porch next to Gibbs and Edmund. Gibbs eyed Edmund angerly, Early found she had an ol bandana wrapped around her neck. She teased Gibbs playfully on how they really were siblings because of this incident, but she also gave Edmund a stern look. Edmund had a rope around his neck and he was now tied to the porch.
When the ol' man decided to take Eddy for a walk, Gibbs explained to Early how she was carried home in the middle of the night by Drift. He had scratched at the door until he could hear the ol' man wake up. He took Early in with a fright that he would lose his only girl. Luckily Early wasn't bit on her major vein. The ol' man stitched her up and set her next to Gibbsy. Drift left Gibbs with a message that he would be watching her from the woods until they can meet once more.
As the three dogs began to heal Gibbs started his shift with Edmund as their wounds had healed faster than Early's. Early visited her mother and father and told them that she was allright. Gibbs cracked down on Eddy and soon he learned that this was his family now and nobody was going to hurt him. Edmund calmed down and appologized to Early, he also became a really close friend of hers.
As the summer days melded into fall Early anticipated a meeting with Drift. When she stepped into the forest she had watched for 6 monthes Early took in a deep breath. Drift's familiar aroma filled her nostrils and she turned around. Their eyes met and Early smiled allowing her tail to wag. Drift nuzzled hur under chin and let out a sigh. Early and Drifter spent the day together. Early asked Drifter for his side of the story.
After defending Gibbs against his wolf pack Drifter's alpha had resented him and disowned Drift as the pack's future alpha. After the incident with Edmund and Early, Drifter challenged the alpha male and killed him. Drift now lead the pack. He invited Early to join him as his mate, but she turned him down. She couldn't leave her family. Early still refused to be Drifter's mate months later and his hopes of them being together started to dwindle. Early couldn't leave her family and he couldn't leave his duties. If they were going to try and raise a family on top of that then they were dumber than Early had thought.
As time went on they weren't young anymore. They stopped meeting eachother the games they used to play ended. One final meeting was set for them to say farewell. Early was at the age where she wanted to settle down and start a family. Drifter would always be the love of her life in the dreamy world of the wilderness that tempted Early somewhere she could live happily ever after, but she had to think rationally about this. Drifter was always going to love Early too but he had a pack that needed him. He needed strong children to take his place, halfbreds wouldn't be for the packs best interest.
Early ended up with Edmund and Drifter with another wolf. Suprisingly one of Early and Edmund's pups looked like Drifter, maybe that final meeting wasn't so final after all... As Early and Eddy's pups grew Early knew that she would eventually have to tell Drifter, but she never could. Edmund didn't even know about their white daughter's real father. This went on until Early was an old dog. The ol' man died many years ago, and Gibbs had died about four years after that when all the dogs were relocated. Edmund was sold to another town while Early ran off and lived on the streets not wanting to leave her precious forest.
Early's pups would visit her by the woods and tell her that she was going crazy but Early couldn't tell them why the forest was so important to her. Eventually Early knew that her time had come, she made one final trip to the spot where she first met Drift, and where he later kept her safe. Drift layed in the sunshine and eventually dozed off into a sleep that she never woke up from. Drifter found her body there when he was walking with one of his grandchildren. He told the youngster to go home to his mother. Drift stayed with Early for a while, until he too slowly passed on...
They were to lovers that were never ment to be.
